Micropolies: Invisible cities series (2018-2019)

Just [5] Micropolies: Invisible Cities Series was a continuation of the series of J[us]t 5 events. The events took the methodology of participation further by dispensing with the audience altogether; everyone was a participant engaged in their solo: invisible performances, in dialogue between a chosen place within the city and the participants own history within it.

Participants joined five events that took place in Stockholm/Sweden, Miami/Florida, Byblos/Lebanon, San Juan, Puerto Rico returning to Athens, Greece for the closure of the cycle. The events reached out to participants across the globe and further individual 'rogue' events took place in London, Copenhagen and as far as Panama City.

just[5] redux (2018)

J[US]T 5: REDUX took place under the umbrella of The Performance Shop as part of the Athens & Epidaurus International Festival.

J[US]T 5- REDUX (from Latin reducere, "to bring back") gathered under a single site and a single reiteration, the five events of J[US]T 5 that took place between May and October 2017. The event was therefore a ‘re-dux’ version, re-articulating and reviewing the accumulated narratives of the original five.

just [5] (2017)

J[us]t5 were a series of site-sensitive interventions around the primer number 5, an event of only 5 minutes, repeated five times, starting at 5’o'clock, on the 5th month of the year, on the fifth decade of the artist’s life, for 4 audience members (+ dancer makes 5), in a 5m area, throughout five locations in Athens, in a five month span.

J[us]t 5 exposed the dialectics between a series of oppositions: the personal/intimate, the public/private, the indoor/outdoor, a private dance in a public space, a city audio walk experience - without walking.

Five events took place :

J[us]t5: 9th May, 2017 5.00pm Site: Agathonos Street, Athens, Greece

An[other]5, May 27th, 2017, 5.00pm, Art Athina 2017.

the sky leans on me (2016)

The event tool place within the framework of the Out/topias Perfomance and Public/Outdoor Space Exhibition at the Benaki Museum, Athens, Greece, November 2016. The Sky leans on me, me the one upright...among all horizontals was conceived as an open invitation to participate in rethinking the shared nature of the performance space, held between the artists (who opened up the space) and the audience invited to inhabit and act upon it.

Concept: Ana Sánchez-Colberg

Production assistant: Ana Gabriela Webb-Sánchez

move + sound (2014-2016)

The project exploring improvisation, choreography, sound and space, developed in two stages. The first stage of R&D took place in 2014 in collaboration with CoDa21, director Dimitris Karalis, composerYiannis Kassetas and members of Guess Who Jazz Ensembke that finished in an informal sharing in the studios of CoDa21. The second stage in 2016 received support from the National Endowment for the Arts and was performed, at the Fine Arts Centre Luis A Ferre, San Juan Puerto Rico, July 23-25, 2016.

A discussion of the project by Ana Sánchez-Colberg with Dimitris Karalis can be read at the recently published Oxford Handbook for Dance Improvisation.

abandoned worlds - tryptich (2015)

Three works created over a period of six years brought together as a triptych explored the concept of ‘crisis’ as exposed by philosopher Jean Luc Nancy. In the choreographic work the concept is explored as a relationship between dancer, audience and sonic spaces.

45,46, 47 The Unbearable was created in 2010 at the height of the crisis and explored ways forward within a hostile environment that at the time seemed capable of exterminating all creativity.

After all is said and done…, created in 2012 is a dialogue between two performers trying to find common ground, a cease fire so to speak, within a struggle to survive amidst the empty rhetoric of the status quo.

The third work, Out of the belly of a whale (premier, 2015), takes Nancy’s statement “in this darkness, this coming elsewhere, this breaching of time and space of all orientation… If there is something rather than nothing, it is because there is this limit made body, these bodies made limit, and exposed by their limits” as a starting point to propose modes of recovery – sound from the inside of the performer's body delineate a path from darkness into light, the invisible to the visible.

45,46,47 the unbearable (2010-2015)

The solo 45, 46, 47 The Unbearable, choreographed and performed by Ana Sánchez-Colberg with an original sound composition by Kiriakos Spirou and lighting by Pavlos Mavridis is a fragile reflection on a dancer reaching maturity and the desire to carve for herself a space without melancholia, metaphor or memory: a space of new possibilities in t he face of constant loss. In 45, 46, 47 The Unbearable, the stage environment is a thick presence of sound that engulfs the performer and makes listening an active-action. In doing this, the solo enters into a dialogue with its audience: the moving body, while it is acting in space, is re-acting within the attentively watching individual, defining a self through listening and touching without striving for a meaning, without requiring a resolution in the end, moving towards a sense in movement, but without ever reaching it.
